Ever the inventor, Mergenthaler saw 100s of ways to improve the “Blower” and started changing the machines while they were still in the assembly process.

Naturally, this enraged the investors of the Linotype (especially https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitelaw_Reid) and they ordered him to stop—because they wanted to make $$$ as fast as possible.

Mergenthaler begged them to let him make his improvements, and eventually created the “Square Base” machine and “Model 1,” which was the standard for all following models.
