This is the first machine that can truly be called a “Linotype” — the “Blower Linotype” from 1886. This is the machine that Ottmar Mergenthaler demonstrated on July 4, 1886 at the “New York Tribune.”

It is called the “Blower” because it used compressed air to push the matrices down the chute to the assembly area (later machines used a simple belt).
